Have you ever had days when you aren’t feeling up for anything? You do not particularly feel down in the dumps, but you are also not feeling productive enough to do your work or even do your house chores. While it is not an ideal situation to be in, you should know that this type of mental state is often a result of exhaustion and burnout. When someone feels a lack of motivation, there are usually valid reasons, especially during this pandemic.
So how do you deal with this kind of situation when you cannot afford to fall behind your tasks and responsibilities? You take a break, sure, but how? Aside from binge eating food and receiving folders of letters and cards, watching a feel-good movie can help.
According to several studies, watching films can benefit a person’s mental health by providing escape and relief. Cinema therapy is prescribed to some people, the same way service dogs are recommended for others.
However, you do not have to be clinically diagnosed to find escape and entertainment in movies. You can enjoy a quick work-break watching feel-good movies. Here are our top recommendations:
Monte Carlo (2011)
We all love a good travel-to-another-country movie, where boy meets girl, and they work things out in the end. Sure, you can say this movie is just like those movies, but what if the main character happens to have a famous royalty as a doppelganger? Yes, Selena Gomez plays two different characters in this romantic-comedy movie. One is Grace, a humble girl from Texas who wants to see Paris, while the other is Princess Cordelia, who was already in Paris but is too stubborn to appreciate what she has.
We wouldn’t tell you more about the plot, but you can expect these two to cross each other’s paths and even assume each other’s identity. The whole movie is light. You wouldn’t have to be stressed out the way you are watching Tenet or any other Nolan film. It is the right movie to watch when you want to take a break.
Pitch Perfect (2012)
Who does not find peace in a good bop, especially acapella bop? Some people listen to music when they are stressed, and well, Pitch Perfect is filled with good musical arrangements. You would not regret any minute of it.
If you haven’t watched the movie yet, it was a film directed by Jason Moore and produced by Elizabeth Banks that got the spotlight in the late 2010s. The story follows a brooding yet talented Becca, played by Anna Kendrick, who tries to wade her way through her college years. There, she finds herself singing for a group of disgraced acapella ladies called the Barden Bellas. It is quite a struggle at first since the main character is not your stereotypical protagonist. She is a strong-headed loner who refuses to let people in until she ultimately finds something she loves doing amongst the Bellas.
It is not your average musical, but it is more like Bring It On but make it acapella singing. Everybody loves a competition-themed movie, especially when the underdogs are the main characters. Pitch Perfect is something you would want to watch during a Friday night when you want to end your work week with a light but enjoyable tone.
Devil Wears Prada (2006)
The 2006 fashion film based on a book of the same name would probably be one of the best movies for people currently struggling at work. Even if you are not in the fashion industry, this iconic movie will inspire you to do better for yourself.
The story follows Andrea Sachs, played by Anne Hathaway, an aspiring journalist who needs to start somewhere. That somewhere being an assistant to a glorified high fashion magazine editor, Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep). Although it was not the job she initially liked to do, and although her heart wasn’t in it first, Andy tried to give it her all until she did not recognize herself anymore.
The movie is even about Vogue’s Anna Wintour, and the fashion editor-icon had to do an office renovation after seeing how close or even accurate the movie production set was.
The movies you need to watch during your break should be something that would not make you think about any plot twist. You shouldn’t even work your brain to find foreshadowing clues. Feel-good movies are supposed to inspire you. It might not be the way you imagined it, but it always works out in the end.
